Tanana Lakes Recreation Area

Development Underway

During 2009, FNSB Parks and Recreation oversaw the construction of a 1,000-ft nature trail, a 3,200-ft segment of the non-motorized loop trail, a 3,000-ft segment of the Northeast Access Road, 0.5-acre picnic area and play turf, and two parking areas.  Four steel vehicle gates have been installed at various locations in order to alleviate the chronic problem of dumping (burned cars, trash, motor oil, etc.) around Tanana Lakes.  The gates do not impact access to the Rifle Range.  We encourages continued public use of Tanana Lakes; ATV, snowmachine, pedestrian access lanes have been provided at each gate location.  Recreation area parking is available on the west side of South Cushman Street Extension near the Rifle Range Road.

Additional construction and site rehabilitation is planned for the summers.  FNSB and our partner, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, are designing the motorized boat launch on the west lake and channel into the Tanana River.  A second segment of the non-motorized loop trail is slated for development next summer.  In cooperation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, we have hired a contractor to enhance waterfowl habitat by removing a road that bisects a wetland on the west side of the non-motorized lake.  We will host a volunteer event to re-vegetate the excavated road site.  The attached status map depicts the completed and anticipated construction activities.  In the mean time drive on down to Tanana Lakes and check out our progress.
