LANDFILL TRIVIA

·         The South Cushman Landfill opened in 1963, and was operated by the City of Fairbanks until 1973.

·         The Landfill facility encompasses 252 acres: 88 acres in the South Cushman Landfill and 164 acres in the Expansion Landfill (Cells 1-9).

·         Each cell of the Expansion Landfill is constructed with a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL), 45-mil reinforced polypropylene geomembrane liner, and 6-inch diameter High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Leachate Collection Pipe.

·         The Landfill uses a 3,000’ long 4” HDPE pipe, to transport an average of 1.7 million gallons of leachate each year to Golden Heart Utilities Waste Water Treatment Facility. (FY09:  3,241,663 gallons)

·         The Landfill uses an Enviro® Cover System, a 1.75-mil thick degradable geosynthetic plastic film as daily cover in lieu of gravel resulting in significant space savings.

·         In FY09, the Landfill collected 103,950 tons of waste; average of 287 tons/day; high August 2008 of 439 tons/day; low February 2009 of 198 tons/day.

·         Waste-to-Energy / Used Oil Program began October 24, 2002, becoming the primary heat source for the main Landfill building, and the HHW facility beginning December 2007. Approximately $100,000 is saved each year by eliminating used oil disposal costs and negating the need to purchase heating fuel.

·         Projected capacity of Expansion Landfill is the year 2048; South Cushman Landfill is 2019.

·         Cold Weather Waiver – no cover material is required for up to three days if the noon temperature is -10° F. or less.
