Permanent ID for Your Pet

Nationally, less than 2 percent of lost cats and only 15-20 percent of lost dogs make it back home.  We are working to improve those dismal statistics in our community but we can do better.  Permanent ID greatly improves the chances of a lost pet making it back home and Animal Control provides both microchips and tattoos.  There is a $15 fee for either method; they can be purchased on a walk in basis and each take about 15 minutes with the animal.

It is still a good idea to have a collar with ID tags for identification so a casual finder can contact the owner(s).  However, collars are often lost or removed.

One truth is universal:  If you move or change phone numbers and don’t update your information with us neither a microchip nor a tattoo will help reunite you with your pet, so keep your information current at Animal Control!

Benefits of permanent identification:

·
Proof of ownership – even without a collar (which can be easily lost)
·
An animal with ID is held for 5 business days at the shelter, while an animal without ID is only held for 3 days before becoming the property of the shelter
·         The faster we find you, the faster you are reunited with your pet

Microchips are roughly the size of a grain of rice and are injected by syringe under the skin between the animal’s shoulder blades. When scanned, they generate a low-level electronic signal containing an alphanumeric ID code.  The ID code can then be called in to the manufacturer or Animal Control for the owner’s contact information.  Microchips are not GPS locators.  Your pet cannot be electronically tracked or located with a microchip.

·         Vet offices will also scan animals free of charge
·         Your chip can be registered nationally so you’re covered if you move out of state or travel
·         Microchips can migrate under the animals skin – have your animal checked periodically

Tattoos are an alphanumeric code that is punched into the ear flap of the animal using permanent dye.

·         This form of ID is only good in the Fairbanks North Star Borough
·         They are painful for the animal and take up to 10 days to heal
·         Tattoos are sometimes difficult to read and may need to be redone
·         Some people find them unattractive

Regardless of the method, permanent identification is the best means available to reunite you with your lost pet.
