The Human Resources Department was established in 2001 to handle the needs of the Fairbanks North Star Borough’s Personnel, Payroll and Risk Management functions.

PERSONNEL/PAYROLL DIVISION

THE MISSION OF THE PERSONNEL/PAYROLL DIVISION IS TO PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL SERVICES TO THE BOROUGH AND TO ENSURE ADEQUATE LEVELS OF HUMAN CAPITAL ARE AVAILABLE WHEN NEEDED. Maintain a quality personnel/payroll resource management system and maintain legal employment practices that support strategic Borough goals and fulfill workforce needs. Develop workforce strategic planning process and programs; provide and coordinate meaningful employee training programs. Serve as liaison between management and the various unions.

RISK MANAGEMENT DIVISION

THE MISSION OF THE RISK MANAGEMENT DIVISION IS TO PROTECT FROM AND MITIGATE THE EFFECTS OF UNPREDICTABLE CASUALTY LOSSES ON THE PERSONNEL, PHYSICAL AND FINANCIAL ASSETS OF THE BOROUGH AND SCHOOL DISTRICT AND TO COORDINATE, PROMOTE AND MONITOR EMPLOYEE BENEFIT PLANS.

The Division manages the Borough and School District’s self-funded programs for employee health, property, general and auto liability and workers’ compensation; obtains insurance coverage for the Borough, School District, Road Service Districts; maintains databases for employee health benefits, self-insured claims, safety, student injuries, facility incidents and for contractor insurance certificates; provides occupational health and safety services to Borough and School District and administers Borough employee benefit programs (deferred compensation, flexible spending accounts, life insurance, employee assistance program, employment-related medical exams).

Check Your Pay Stub!

Now that Open Enrollment is closed, any changes you elected to your Health Plan and Flexible Spending (Medical Flex Acct and Dependent Care)  take effect January 1,2019.

*Be sure to check your paystub to make sure that all elections are properly deducted from your pay checks.*

Also remember to keep your friends in Human Resources informed, within 30 days of major changes.  Whether it's as simple as changing your address through Employee Online, or if you need to add or remove a dependent from your Health Benefits, we are here to help! Not sure if the change in your life is a "Qualifying Event" and subject to the 30 day window?  We can help! So don't sit on those marriage and birth certificates, don't leave the 26 year old adult dependent on your plan, don't miss out on important mailings from Welfare and Pension, PRS, or your 457b Plan.  Keep us in the loop because we care about you!
