FIREWOOD AVAILABLE:

Permits to cut firewood on Borough-owned lands can be obtained at the Land Management Office, 2nd floor of the Borough Administrative Center in Fairbanks.  Please call in advance if you have questions about cutting at a different location or another specific need that may require extra time to accommodate.

Where can you cut?
Currently, we have cutting areas in North Pole at Brock and Repp Road.  This area also allows for cutting in the burned area and in Salcha on Johnson Road.

We are planning a right-of-way clearing project in the Rosie Creek/Cripple Creek Road Area.  Check back for more information or call the office, 459-1241.

The Army Corps of Engineers at the Chena Flood Control Project near Moose Creek is or will be soon, offering wood cut in a clearing project.  Contact them at 488-2748.

What can I cut?
The Borough's firewood cutting program is a selective cutting program aimed at improving the health of our interior forest.  Permits allow to the holder to take standing dead or fallen down Birch and Spruce AND over-mature Birch.  Aspen and Cottonwood can be taken in any state of health but taking these species is not encouraged because it is an inferior wood to burn for heat.

How much?
Personal use firewood cutting permits are limited to 20 cords per person per year, there is no minimum.  The cost is $5.00 per cord.  Commercial firewood cutting units may be available, please call our office - 459-1241.

More good information on burning wood from the EPA and FNSB Air Quality.

The Land Management department is responsible for the acquisition, management and transfer of real property owned by the borough.

The department issues all leases, licenses and other agreements for the use of the Borough's land and resources. The department conducts the annual land sale program making land available to the Borough's residents through subdivision and recreational development as well as large parcel sales. These sales generate revenue which in turn supports the continuing sale program. The department is also responsible for the annual Tax Foreclosure Program which helps to keep individual property owner's taxes down through the collection of delinquent property taxes.

EPA Brownfields Grants

Former Solid Waste Recycling Center Assessment Grant

-Analysis of Brownfields Cleanup Alternatives - Public Comment Period (3/26/07 thru 4/27/07) - CLOSED

The pubic comment period for the Analysis of Brownfields Cleanup Alternatives for the former Universal Recycling, Inc. site located at 400 Sanduri Street, Fairbanks, Alaska has concluded.  No substantial public comments or concerns were received.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough had determined that Alternative #4, Drum and Debris Removal and Disposal, as defined in the Waste Disposal Plan dated 3/20/2006, best meets the project goals of redevelopment of site and return to productive use, while reducing risks to human health and the environment.  As a result, the Waste Disposal Plan has been selected as the final cleanup plan for this site.

We would like to thank everyone for their comments.
